What is a teleprompter?

A teleprompter is a device used to display text or a script for a speaker or performer to read while looking directly into the camera or audience. It allows the speaker to maintain eye contact without having to glance down at notes or a script, delivering more natural and engaging presentation.

How does the teleprompter work?

The screen is located in front of, and usually below the lens of a professional video camera, and the words on the screen are reflected to the eyes of the speaker using a sheet of clear glass or other beam splitter, so that they are read by looking directly at the lens position, but are not imaged by the lens.

Teleprompters, as a script reading tool, are very common in television broadcasting, public speaking, video production, and live events. The text scrolls on a screen, often positioned in front of a camera lens or just out of sight of the audience. The speaker reads the script as it scrolls, giving the appearance that they are speaking spontaneously or from memory.

Most modern teleprompters can be physical devices with mirrors and screens or software applications that run on computers, tablets, or smartphones - with the help of teleprompter app, making them accessible for a wide range of uses, from professional broadcasts to DIY video content.
