VENICE is equipped with a 36 x 24-mm full-frame image sensor designed specifically for high end cinematography, and can capture images up to a maximum resolution of 6048 x 4032. By switching imager modes, VENICE can natively support Super35 24.3 x 18.0 mm, 4096 x 3024 resolution (equivalent to 4-perforation motion picture film) and Super35 24.3 x 12.8 mm, 4096 x 2160 resolution (equivalent to 3-perforation motion picture film). In other words, VENICE’s new full-frame sensor can capture in almost any format, including full 18 mm-height Super35 anamorphic and spherical and full-frame 24 mm-height anamorphic and spherical. Almost any aspect ratio can be conjured up: 1.85:1, 2.39:1, 17:9, the list goes on in full-frame or Super35.
In full-frame, you can use the full 6048 pixel width of the sensor for widescreen spherical 2.39:1 or Large Format Scope. Full-Frame can be used creatively in a number of ways – for example, to allow for extra shallow depth of field or super-wide shooting.
For anamorphic shooting and production, Super35 full height 2 x squeeze anamorphic is supported.
These popular imager sizes are natively supported by VENICE. Current Super 35 mm PL mount lenses can be used.
Also available in early 2019 will be the free VENICE Version 3.0 firmware upgrade, which further augments VENICE’s capabilities, incorporating feedback from filmmakers and protecting customers’ investment by allowing the camera to grow with the user. Version 3.0 firmware will add a recording profile within the 16-bit X-OCN (eXtended tonal range Original Camera Negative).
Adds the following:
This new profile, called X-OCN XT, captures the highest quality imagery when using the AXS-R7 portable memory recorder. X-OCN XT is ideal for demanding visual effects work and productions requiring the utmost image quality from VENICE. The new X-OCN XT profile maintains economical file sizes comparable to Sony’s RAW file size, making the workflow affordable and efficient. In comparing X-OCN with Sony’s RAW format, X-OCN has superior reproduction in low light areas and high light areas. In VENICE’s 4K 17:9 imager mode, users will have the flexibility to record three X-OCN profiles (XT, ST, LT) and Sony RAW with V3.0 firmware. (Prior to V3.0 firmware, X-OCN LT, X-OCN ST and Sony RAW are available). UBMS can provide best price and fast delivry for Sony Venice Cinema camera.
The VENICE is designed to start you off with a basic camera and, through firmware updates and licenses, upgrade it over time. This allows you to upgrade it as your needs grow, instead of having to buy a whole new camera system. Licenses can be permanent upgrades or used for limited periods of time, for those jobs that require more features than you normally use.
The sensor features more than 15 stops of dynamic range and has been designed to exceed the BT.2020 color space—which is larger than the DCI-P3 color space—enabling you to create stunning images with a camera that already exceeds future specs.
In full-frame, you can use the full 6048-pixel width of the sensor for widescreen spherical 2.39:1, or large format scope. A firmware upgrade and license are required for full-frame recording.
The VENICE features a high-speed readout that minimizes the dreaded "jello" camera effect that plagues some CMOS sensor cameras.
The VENICE comes with the industry-standard PL lens mount. It is compatible with all Super 35 and full-frame PL lenses, spherical and anamorphic. The removable lens mount includes contacts that support Cooke /i Technology. The camera's lens information is recorded as metadata frame by frame.
Removing the PL Mount exposes the camera's E-Mount, which allows compatibility with E-Mount lenses. This E-Mount is designed with a lever lock that eliminates the need to rotate your lens when mounting, and the lever lock secures the lens in the mount minimizing play. Rotating of the locking collar means that in most cases lens support rigs don't need to be removed, which saves time during production. A planned firmware update is required to take full advantage of the E-Mount. The VENICE records XAVC UHD 4K or HD ProRes internally to its SxS card slots. An optional AXS-R7 on-board recorder will enable 16-bit Raw and X-OCN recording to AXS cards with a future firmware update.
There are many Full Frame and Super 35 cine-zoom lenses with PL mounts available for the VENICE from Angenieux, Cooke, Fujinon, Zeiss and many others. While there is an immediate and obvious benefit in shooting with a longer focal length, this might not always be desirable. With lens manufacturing improving the quality and speed of cine-zoom lenses every year, there were already an increasing number of cinematographers who chose to work with high-end cine-zooms, rather than a full set of PLs, prior to the pandemic. More cinematographers again regularly deployed cine-zooms to second units to act as ‘variable’ prime lenses.
For example, with the Fujinon Premista 28-100mm or 80-250mm Full Frame lenses you would have most shooting options fully covered on one or both of the lenses. Even when working Full Frame many cine-zoom lenses are considered largely indistinguishable from fixed focal length glass recording the same shallow depth of focus beloved by the modern cinematographer. Angenieux and Cooke even offer a range of anamorphic cine-zoom lenses. The clear advantage is removing the necessity to swap out lenses as often between shots, with more portable, faster set-ups while respecting that lens choice is personal to the cinematographer based around each lens having its own distinct personality and characteristics and the ideal choice for the production. If you want more details about Venice you can contact UBMS .
Many lens vendors have also adopted Cooke Optics’ /i Technology that collects lens metadata captured alongside the main media. This allows a continuous remote readout of the precise focus setting, depth of focus and even T stop, which allows both the first AC and DIT to receive valuable recording data without having to approach the camera or take measurements while shooting. (The lens metadata recorded by /i Technology is also used to support later VFX and DI calibration work and saves valuable time in post.)
Soy recently published VENICE Remote Operation Cinematography Guide and it focus on social distancing in film productions specially suite for the Pandemic situation . This guide covers Sony and third-party products and solutions for the most complete picture of today’s remote operation technology.
